Yes, I do agree Guillaume!

The sound (and style) is completely different during January and February. I like to think of this brief but ultra jazzy time as the "Swing Period" in the Grateful Dead's history.

By March its largely gone...

Thanks Rob, Miss D & CLIFF; I have scanned those "guitar sequence sites" and always get a little confused for the exact months in question, but seems the back to back clarification has been part of my confusion.

What always struck me is that Jerry seemed relatively consistent in latter yrs (using one for extended periods) whereas depending on which "guitar history of Jerry" site you scan, it seems there were a number of different ones from 65 thru 71...and sometimes this "flip-flopping". Not that it's a sign of anything whatsoever, but working with small time bands in the Bay Area, I was always struck by how lead guitar players, even those with money to buy multiple guitars, always had a fav that they used at every big gig, so we got to know them by that consistency ("so and so ALWAYS plays that black strat!" or what have you...).

just a random note on Gibson pickups - as far as i know, Gibson phased out the P-90 single coil p/u's at some point, replacing them with considerably higher gain dual coil humbuckers on pretty much all of their guitars...but those P-90's definitely had something that the humbuckers didn't have, hard to describe, more clarity if i remember (been a good long while since trying them...)

edit: can't tell from the photo, "switches to another black Gibson" whether or not those are p-90's? seems to me that 10/12/68 has a real phat sound, though that could be attributed to the suped up Fender Twins (the SG in the 69 photo definitely has dual coil humbuckers)

One last thing - the only photo I've seen of the March 3 Haight Street show has Jerry playing the Gold-top.

I'm giving up now.
